Fiberglass Pool Installation in Walnut Creek
A fiberglass pool is a one-piece shell made in a factory, trucked in and set into an excavated hole. On site, the work is mostly excavation, setting and leveling the shell, plumbing, backfill, coping and decking. In Angi's San Francisco data, fiberglass pools cost $55,000–$100,000+.
How a fiberglass pool goes in
- Model and placement. Choose a shell from the manufacturer's lineup and site it inside setbacks, away from easements and utilities.
- Permits. Same permit path as any new pool, including stamped plans where the jurisdiction asks for them. Permits by city
- Excavation. The hole is dug slightly larger than the shell, with a level base of crushed gravel.
- Delivery and set. The shell arrives on a truck. If it can't roll through the side yard, a crane lifts it over the house; street use may need a permit and neighbors' patience for a few hours.
- Plumbing and backfill. Lines are connected and the shell is backfilled while it is filled with water so pressure stays balanced.
- Coping, deck, equipment. Coping and decking finish the edge; equipment is set and wired.
- Startup and final. Water is balanced, equipment commissioned, safety features inspected.
Shell sizes and limits
Fiberglass shells come in fixed sizes from small spools and plunge models up to full family pools. Because the shell travels by road, maximum widths are limited, so very wide or very deep pools are gunite territory.
- Ask for the exact model, length, width and depth profile in the bid
- Confirm the delivery route: street width, overhead lines, trees, crane position
- Check the shell fits inside setbacks with room for coping and deck
- On sloped lots, the shell still needs a level, engineered pad
Small yards
On a tight lot, a small fiberglass model is often the simplest way to fit a pool inside setbacks. See small and plunge pools.
Pros and cons
| Fiberglass | |
|---|---|
| Faster on site | Shell goes in within days once the hole is ready; no shell cure or plaster. |
| Surface | Smooth gelcoat; no replastering, and less surface for algae to cling to. |
| Design limits | Fixed shapes and depths; limited custom spas and vanishing edges. |
| Access | Often needs a crane in established neighborhoods. |
| Slopes and soil | Needs a stable, level pad; expansive or moving soils need engineering like any pool. |
| Cost | $55,000–$100,000+ (Angi SF); $45,000–$85,000+ (Golden Yards). |
Timeline compared with gunite
The construction phase is shorter than gunite because there's no steel cage to tie, no shell to cure and no plaster to apply. The overall project still includes design, permits, excavation, electrical, decking and inspections, so plan on months, not weeks. Permits and HOA review often take longer than the install itself. Soil and slope on East Bay lots
Hillside lots in Lafayette, Orinda and the Danville foothills often need retaining walls or piers before any pool can go in, and Danville requires a geotechnical report on slopes steeper than 5:1 (Danville submittal requirements). Expansive clay is commonly cited by local builders; ask your installer how the base and backfill are designed for your soil rather than assuming. Hillside pools

Cost
Fiberglass usually starts lower than gunite, but crane fees, retaining walls and decking close the gap on harder lots. See the full cost table.
