Pool Construction Timeline, Stage by Stage

Plan on roughly 3–6 months from design to first swim, the schedule assumption in Golden Yards' California pool guide. A gunite pool moves through eight stages; permits and engineering usually take longer than the construction itself.

01 · Design

Layout, size, spa and decking on a scaled plan; equipment list.

You: decide size, spa, safety features and budget; collect HOA rules and any survey. Ask for a scaled plan with setbacks drawn.

02 · Engineering & permits

Structural calcs, soils report if the site needs one, plan check, HOA review.

You: sign off drawings, submit to the HOA if required. Danville asks for a geotechnical report on slopes over 5:1 and other conditions (submittal list); the County asks for engineer-stamped calcs (handout). Permits by city

03 · Excavation

Dig, haul-off, layout check. Soil surprises show up here.

You: clear the access path, protect landscaping, warn neighbors about trucks. Rock or groundwater here becomes a change order; know how the contract prices it.

04 · Steel & plumbing

Rebar cage, suction and return lines, electrical bonding; inspections.

You: confirm the layout and spa position before steel goes in; the inspector checks steel and bonding before gunite.

05 · Gunite

Concrete shell sprayed in place, then left to cure.

You: nothing to do but keep off it. The shell cures before tile; ask the builder for their cure and watering schedule.

06 · Tile & coping

Waterline tile, coping stones, then decking around the pool.

You: choose tile, coping and decking with samples in daylight; confirm the safety barrier location now.

07 · Plaster

Interior finish (plaster, quartz or pebble) applied over the shell.

You: pick the finish color wet, not dry. After plaster the pool is filled promptly.

08 · Startup

Fill, balance water chemistry, commission equipment, final inspection.

You: learn the equipment, schedule service if you want it, and keep the final inspection card. Check with your water agency (EBMUD or Contra Costa Water District) for any current fill guidance.

Fiberglass sequence

Fiberglass skips steel, gunite, tile-before-plaster and plaster: design and permits, excavation, gravel base, shell set by truck or crane, plumbing and backfill while filling, coping and deck, startup. Fiberglass pools

Timeline questions

How long does it take to build a pool?
Golden Yards uses 3–6 months as its initial schedule assumption for California pools. Hillside engineering, HOA review and permit queues can push it longer; a simple fiberglass pool on a flat lot can come in under it.
What slows a pool project down most?
Usually paperwork, not digging: engineering, a soils report, plan check, HOA review, and inspections that must pass before the next phase.
